How sustainable is sustainibility

Sustainability - environment conservation - Eco friendliness is the name for the major design issue in the current dates. But are the steps that being taken actually that sustaining? Bamboo for plastics, Organics against polythene material... but is that alone enough? The steps to stop environment degradation calls for more exploitation of natural resources. For a small example, if all plastic packaging were replaced by natural materials wouldn't that call for a huge rise in the demands of natural materials and thus lead to more felling of trees, more pressure on the resources. If we all were to shun polyester for cotton , wont more plantations be required. If only natural dyes of flowers and berries were used on all the clothes of the world....
Surely industrialization and synthetic production developed for a reason?

I am no science grad but i question

A hundred years ago when the power crisis was hardly a concept and 70% of India still lived by sunlight, Tesla erected a tower of endless power. With a complete circuit for endless generation of electricity employing the free electrons of the earth (thats what they tell me). in short it would be a complete solution to the endless power crisis. The political forces today across the world entreat us to perpetual policies and cautions for power conservation but its a paradox that the same powers yesterday had done all in their capacity to put an end to what might have been an end to all their concerns.
And even today couldn't this be one really paying research to do??
